MacDermid Lamarsh History

MacDermid Lamarsh Tradition

The MacDermid Lamarsh firm was formed in 1987 with the merger of two of Saskatchewan's oldest law firms.

MacDermid & Company was established in 1903 by J.D. Ferguson. In 1908 he invited Fred MacDermid, a recent graduate of the University of Manitoba, to join him in his practice in Saskatoon.

MacDermid & Company count among its alumni; John Diefenbaker, Mr. Justice David Wright, and Mr. Justice Frank Dickson.

The historical roots of Lamarsh & Company date back to 1913 when Bill Gilchrist set up practice in Saskatoon. He was joined by Archie Lamarsh in 1930 and the firm eventually came to bear his name. Among its alumni are Count Theodore Bujila, Cecil Schmitt, Q.C., Mr. Justice Delmar Perras of the Alberta Court of Queen's Bench and Mr. Justice James Estey, former Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada.

The firm's history is inextricably interwoven into the political and economic fabric of Saskatchewan. Fred MacDermid was instrumental in bringing the potash industry to this Province, he was a founder of the Saskatoon Club and his shining legacy, the Saskatoon Foundation. A couple of Archie Lamarsh's many accomplishments are the establishment of low income and subsidized housing in Saskatoon, and the founding of CJNB radio in North Battleford, Saskatchewan.
